“All preparations were very potent in producing cancer-cell death.”
Whole-plant cannabis extracts “impaired the survival” of 12 different kinds of cancer cells and stopped them from spreading, according to an article in Oncotarget (June 2019).
The anti-tumor effects of 12 different extracts were studied, and all preparations were “very potent in producing cancer-cell death,” the article said. The scientists also discovered that different types of cancer cells responded differently to the same cannabis extracts.
“These studies suggest a synergistic effect of various Cannabis compounds…”
While some of the compounds were THC-rich, whole cannabis extracts were superior to THC on its own, it said, quoting researchers from the Israel Institute of Technology.
“These studies suggest a synergistic effect of various Cannabis compounds and therefore…utmost importance to study the anti-tumor effects of whole Cannabis extracts.”
CBD and THC destroyed cells in multiple myeloma whereas THC or CBD alone did not.
The article pointed to a 2018 study on breast-cancer cells that “demonstrated the advantage of using a whole Cannabis extract over pure Δ9-THC.”
Another study, showed that a combination of CBD and THC destroyed cells in multiple myeloma while administration of pure THC or CBD alone did not.
