Scientists say anti-tumor effect of whole-cannabis extracts shows “synergistic effect” of various compounds.
Whole-plant cannabis extracts “impaired the survival” of 12 different kinds of cancer cells and stopped them from spreading, according to a study published in Oncotarget in June 2019.
The study characterized the anti-tumor effects of 12 different extracts on 12 different cancer cell lines sourced from different tumour origin.
All 12 different preparations were “very potent in producing cancer-cell death,” said the study.
Different cancer cells respond differently to the same cannabis extracts.
The scientists also discovered that different types of cancer cells responded differently to the same cannabis extracts.
While some of the compounds were THC-rich, whole cannabis extracts were superior to THC on its own, said the researchers from the Israel Institute of Technology,
“These studies suggest a synergistic effect of various Cannabis compounds and therefore…utmost importance to study the anti-tumor effects of whole Cannabis extracts.”
Another study showed combination of CBD and THC destroyed cells in multiple myeloma whereas THC or CBD alone did not.
The researchers pointed to a 2018 study on breast-cancer cells that “demonstrated the advantage of using a whole Cannabis extract over pure Δ9-THC.”
Another study, they said, showed how a combination of CBD and THC destroyed cells in multiple myeloma while administration of pure THC or CBD alone did not.
